Kitebrook Preparatory School awarded prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag
The children of Kitebrook Preparatory School, near Moreton-in-Marsh, are celebrating after being awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag in recognition of their dedication to changing the planet.
The Eco-Schools Green Flag Award is an international accreditation that has recognised and rewarded young people’s environmental actions for over 25 years and is the perfect way to acknowledge, reward and celebrate the ecological achievements of young people. It creates the next generation of innovative, inspirational environmentalists and tells local communities that a school, college or nursery is forward-thinking and actively engaged in protecting our planet.
In order to fly the prestigious Green Flag in their grounds, children at the Cotswold prep school immersed themselves in leading, organising and enjoying many ‘Eco Days’, raising funds and awareness for climate change organisations; they even founded their very own Kitebrook Eco Environmental Day.
In addition, the children assisted with external-led projects, learning first-hand how to make a difference to the environment, and were engaged by visiting speakers with connections to world organisations, such as the United Nations and an amazing world changing project called ‘Rev’ (a machine which picks up rubbish in the ocean). Kitebrook children and staff also took part in an eco competition, constructing their own musical instruments from recyclable materials, forming a Kitebrook band and performing their original Reduce, Reuse, Recycle song.
Kitebrook teacher and Eco-Committee Coordinator Charlotte Tudge, said: “At Kitebrook we believe in a more environmentally sustainable and socially just world where people live healthy, enjoyable lives in thriving environments. What young people learn today will influence how our future generations live. We seek to nurture knowledge, creativity, kindness, wisdom, critical thinking, empathy and many more of the skills and values that will allow sustainable development to flourish and a better world to emerge.
“Receiving this award is a proud moment for us all and reinforces our motto — ‘Together we can decide on what our future can be’.”
The school’s Eco Committee continues to work hard at developing the school grounds, helping with biodiversity, by building various habitats for animals, planting trees and growing fruits and vegetables to eat, making a difference to the environment and the future of Kitebrook.
